Project Summary

The Montgomery County Engineer is proposing to reconstruct the roadway embankment supporting Astoria Road and perform restoration of the adjacent stream approximately 0.5 miles South of Oxford Road in German Township.

In August of 2024, the County was alerted to the presence of a landslide developing along Astoria Road. At the time, the distance between the edge of pavement and the vertical shear face was 10 feet. The shear face was approximately 25 feet tall and 100 feet wide. The embankment held that condition until November 2024. Between November 2024 and January 2025, the shear face crept inward 2.5 feet more. By February 2025, over 1.5 more feet had fallen away, leaving less than 6 feet from edge of pavement, 3 feet from the guardrail posts. At this time, the County Engineer declared the road to be unsafe for traffic and Astoria Road was closed.

The restoration project will require reconstruction of the embankment using a reinforced soil slope, reconstruction of the existing roadway, and realignment of the stream with armored streambanks.
