Project Summary
The MOT-DIA Northeast Logistics Access project will improve surface transportation routes along the eastern and northern perimeter of the Dayton International Airport (DIA), and will provide a link between burgeoning logistics development around the airport and the interstate highway system through the I-75/ Northwoods Boulevard interchange.
The improved routes will include North Dixie Drive from Inverness Avenue to Lightner Road, Northwoods Boulevard from the Flying J Truck Stop to North Dixie Drive, and Lightner Road from North Dixie Drive to the Chewy Fulfilment Center. A new signalized intersection with greater turn lane capacity will be constructed at the North Dixie Drive/ Northwoods Boulevard intersection, and a single-lane roundabout will be constructed to replace the existing stop-controlled tee intersection at Lightner Road and North Dixie Drive.
The existing two-lane section of North Dixie Drive in Butler Township will be widened to a three lane roadway with a two-way left turn lane (TWLTL). Similarly, the eastern portion of Lightner Road will be widened from the existing two-lane section to a three lane roadway with TWLTL east of the DIA. An 11-foot shared use path (SUP) will be provided along the east side of North Dixie Drive from Inverness Avenue in the City of Vandalia to the new roundabout on Lightner Road at the Montgomery-Miami County line, and the SUP will extend along the south side of Lightner Road to the Chewy Fulfilment Center.
Travel time reliability and vehicular and pedestrian safety are expected to improve with the addition of TWLTLs on North Dixie Drive and Lightner Road, the proposed intersection improvements at North Dixie Drive and Northwoods Boulevard, the new roundabout at Lightner Road and North Dixie Drive, and the construction of almost three miles of continuous shared use path throughout the project limits.
The MOT-DIA Northeast Logistics Access project will be administered by the Montgomery County Engineers Office (MCEO), and is expected to be financed with 80% federal transportation funding allocated through ODOT’s Transportation Review Advisory Council (TRAC). In Butler Township, North Dixie Drive and Lightner Road are county roads under the jurisdiction of MCEO. Local share costs will be split approximately 70%-30% between Montgomery County and the City of Vandalia, with supplemental project funding expected to be secured through the Ohio Public Works Commission (OPWC).
In March 2023, MCEO mailed over 300 copies of an initial project information brochure to interested parties located along or near the project corridor. In January 2025, MCEO distributed an updated project information brochure and project status letter summarizing the current project scope, schedule, and budget to interested parties and stakeholders along the corridor. The updated project information brochure and project status letter are posted on this project web page.
